Local Authorities Investigate Coyote Attack on 2-Year-Old Child in Whitby.

Local Authorities Investigate Coyote Attack on 2-Year-Old Child in Whitby.

The latest coyote attack in Whitby, a town in the Durham Region of Ontario, has left a two-year-old boy with serious, non-life-threatening injuries after a coyote entered a playground and attacked the toddler unprovoked.

The incident occurred on Sunday around 8:30 p.m. at Vanier Park, where the child was playing with his guardian when the coyote approached and bit the child on the face. Luckily, bystanders came to the child's rescue, scaring the coyote away and ensuring the child's safety.

The child was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. This incident is just the latest in a series of coyote attacks in the area, with two other incidents occurring in Whitby and Markham in May.

Coyotes usually like to leave people alone.

Durham police are working closely with local authorities, including Whitby and the Durham Region Health Department, to investigate the incident and implement measures aimed at reducing the risk of future encounters. They are reminding the public to be vigilant when using public spaces, particularly during early morning and evening hours when coyotes are most active.

Residents are being encouraged to report coyote sightings and concerning behaviour to Animal Services so trends can be monitored and action can be taken. The police are also urging anyone who witnesses a coyote exhibiting aggressive behaviour or posing an immediate threat to public safety to call 9-1-1.

Whitby regional councillor Chris Leahy has called for coyote safety education in Whitby schools, citing the recent attacks as a wake-up call for the municipality. Leahy wants planning to begin during the summer so that information sessions can be ready to go in every public and Catholic elementary school when students return in September.

If elected as the mayor of Whitby, Leahy has pledged to introduce a Coyote Response Policy to co-ordinate efforts and establish a clear, community-wide response to coyote activity. He believes that by working together, the municipality can develop a proactive strategy that protects residents while promoting responsible coexistence with wildlife.

Residents are being advised to exercise caution when using public spaces, especially during early morning and evening hours when coyotes are most active. They are also being reminded to keep a close eye on their pets and small children when outdoors, as coyotes may view them as potential prey.

The recent incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of being vigilant and prepared when encountering wildlife. By taking necessary precautions and reporting suspicious activity, residents can help prevent future attacks and ensure a safe community for everyone.
