Trainspotting The Musical’s planned UK tour has been cancelled after ticket sales fell short of expectations.
The stage adaptation, drawn from the bestselling novel and the 1996 film of the same name, opened at London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket on 15 July.
Critical response to the production was largely negative, with reviewers describing it as shocking and forgettable.
The tour, which was set to launch on 19 October in cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester, will not proceed, and the show will conclude its London run in early September.
Ticket holders will be contacted by their point of purchase and offered full refunds, according to a statement from the production’s spokesperson.
The spokesperson expressed gratitude to the cast, crew and creative team, noting that the current economic climate contributed to lower‑than‑expected ticket sales.
Members of the cast described the cancellation as a devastating blow after months of development and rehearsals.
When questioned about the decision, the author highlighted the difficulty of mounting a large‑scale touring production during a period of reduced consumer spending and said the future of the show remains uncertain.
Scottish actor Robbie Scott leads the cast as Mark Renton, supported by Sheridan Townsley, Kieran Andrew, Frankie O’Connor, Finlay Paul, Rebecca McKinnis, Gordon Cooper, Ashley J Russell, Rosie Dignan, Yana Harris and Sophie Hutchinson.
The production will remain at Theatre Royal Haymarket until 5 September, after which its subsequent plans have not been confirmed.
