Meta addresses critical privacy vulnerability in smart glasses with latest software update.

Meta addresses critical privacy vulnerability in smart glasses with latest software update.

The future of smart glasses is uncertain, but one thing is clear: these devices are here to stay. Meta sold seven million of its smart glasses in 2025 alone, making it a significant player in the market. As more people wear these devices, concerns about user privacy are growing.

Meta smart glasses have a camera embedded in the frames, allowing users to capture photos and videos without drawing attention to themselves. However, this feature also raises concerns about user privacy. The company's use of a "capture LED" indicator light is intended to alert others when the camera is in use, but some users have found ways to disable this feature.

Originally, users could disable the capture LED by blocking it with a piece of tape, effectively rendering Meta smart glasses invisible. This led to a cottage industry of techs offering services to disable the camera for a fee. However, Meta has since updated its smart glasses to disable the camera if the capture LED is tampered with or destroyed.

Meta has also acknowledged the issue and addressed it in its newsroom, stating that users should not be able to use their Meta smart glasses' camera if the light is not fully operational. The company is taking steps to prevent users from disabling the capture LED, including taking down ads on its platforms and seeking legal action against companies that offer services to destroy the LED.

However, the issue may not be fully resolved. The company's update may not be foolproof, and some users may find ways to bypass the feature. Meta's decision to equip users with cameras on their faces raises fundamental questions about user privacy and the potential consequences of this technology.
