Google Enhances Chrome for Android with Feature Previously Available Only on iOS Devices

Google often releases new features and apps on one platform at a time, but contrary to expectations, it is not always Android that gets priority. Despite being the creator of Android, Google sometimes releases new features for its apps on iOS first, before bringing them to Android. This trend has been observed in the past, with one notable example being the release of "Edge Eloquent," an on-device AI transcription app, exclusively for Apple devices in April.

However, Google is now bringing one of its previously iOS-exclusive Chrome features to Android. The latest update, Chrome 150, introduces a dedicated back button for Android devices. This change can be noticed after updating the Chrome for Android app and opening the three-dot menu. Previously, users only had the option to move forward a page in the Chrome app and had to rely on Android's native back button or gesture.

The addition of a dedicated back button makes Chrome for Android feel more like its desktop counterpart and will be a welcome change for those switching to Android for the first time. The reason for this update is unclear, but it is likely due to the fact that iOS lacks a dedicated back button, making it a necessary feature for Chrome on that platform. On Android, the system-wide back button can be used, but it may not be the most intuitive experience in a browser.

Other changes in Chrome 150 for Android include the relocation of the site info button to the overflow menu under "Site controls." The "Add to home screen" option has also been rebranded as "Install and create shortcut," which may cause confusion for users who are accustomed to adding webpages to their home screen. To check for the update, users can visit the Chrome page in the Play Store or go to their profile, tap "Manage apps & device," and look for available updates.

The update may also be installed automatically, but users can check manually to ensure they have the latest version of Chrome. The changes in Chrome 150 are relatively minor, but they contribute to a more streamlined and intuitive browsing experience on Android. The addition of a dedicated back button, in particular, is a notable improvement that will likely be appreciated by Android users.
