Friend of Manchester Synagogue Attacker Sentenced over Military Base

Friend of Manchester Synagogue Attacker Sentenced over Military Base

Mohammad Bashir, a 31‑year‑old man holding a Pakistani passport, was sentenced for his role in planning a terrorist attack on the UK Defence Academy near Swindon. The facility, which accommodates up to 4,000 staff, contractors, students and visitors, is a key training centre for the British armed forces and government agencies.

In court, the judge described Bashir as having become a “firmly committed jihadist” by August of the previous year. Together with Al‑Shamie, he allegedly planned an assault that would have caused multiple fatalities and involved a willingness to die in the process.

When Bashir claimed that he no longer held extremist views, the judge dismissed the assertion, stating that the defendant had provided no evidence of a genuine change in attitude and remained dangerous.

The "long-standing, committed jihadist" planned a terror attack on a defence base with the man who went on to commit a fatal knife rampage at a Manchester synagogue, Manchester Crown Court court has heard. Bashir, 31, drove Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, on a 10-hour round trip to conduct hostile reconnaissance at the UK Defence Academy in Shrivenham, Swindon, on August 14 last year before they deliberately disposed of their mobile phones. Less than two months later, Al-Shamie was shot dead by police on October 2 while he carried out his terrorist attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in which two worshippers were killed. After the sentence was pronounced, Bashir walked out of the dock smiling at family members in the upper public gallery, a moment captured by witnesses in the courtroom.

The prosecution’s case was built on WhatsApp messages and voice notes exchanged between Bashir and Al‑Shamie, uncovered after police examined two phones seized from Al‑Shamie earlier in 2025. The devices were originally confiscated when Bashir was arrested in February for a non‑molestation order breach and later in September on rape suspicion.

Police acknowledged a missed opportunity to gather intelligence on Al‑Shamie before the synagogue attack, and a chief constable issued an apology for the oversight.

Additional evidence included a warrant‑approved review of Al‑Shamie’s iCloud and iPhone data, alongside CCTV footage of the two men at the Al‑Sunnah Mosque in Cheetham Hill. Both men mistakenly believed their conversations were unrecorded, thinking they were hidden from cameras.
