The year 2024 has seen a devastating wave of violence against women, with numerous tragic cases highlighting the need for change.
In one shocking incident, a group of perpetrators were found guilty of 10 counts of rape and seven indecent image offences related to two victims, with the offenders even recording the attacks on their phones and laughing as they outnumbered and intimidated their victims.
The court heard that the judge's decision was influenced by the fact that the victims had previously engaged in sexual activity, with the Attorney General describing this as a 'significantly outdated approach'.
One of the victims, a 15-year-old girl who wishes to remain anonymous, spoke out about her traumatic experience, stating that she felt 'humiliated and painful' when questioned in detail about the attack.
She described being asked about the specifics of the assault and being implied to have 'wanted it' or 'chosen it', which further traumatised her and left her feeling like she had done something wrong.
The victim's testimony highlighted the need for a more sensitive and informed approach to handling cases of rape and sexual assault, particularly when it comes to the treatment of victims.
