Democrats Slam Trump's Saudi Nuclear Deal Amid Bipartisan Backlash

The White House announced a new nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia that has elicited sharply divided reactions from Congress.

The Department of Energy described the deal as a framework to support a civilian nuclear energy program in Saudi Arabia, providing U.S. technology and expertise while incorporating safeguards to prevent the diversion of materials for weapons use.

Democratic representatives voiced concerns that permitting Saudi enrichment could trigger a regional arms race and undermine nonproliferation efforts. “It is outrageous,” said one lawmaker, warning that lax safeguards might prompt other countries to pursue nuclear weapons.

Republican lawmakers stressed the importance of partnership and congressional oversight. “Congress should be central to any agreement, and I look forward to reviewing it,” said a representative, noting that Saudi reforms could foster lasting regional peace.

Some legislators questioned the administration’s broader strategy, suggesting that ties between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia could influence policy decisions and increase the risk of expanding nuclear weapons in the Middle East.

The administration’s move seeks to strengthen its relationship with Saudi Arabia while maintaining pressure on Iran over its nuclear program, a balance that Congress is expected to scrutinize in the months ahead.
