AOC Slams McConnell's Extended Senate Absence

Senator Mitch McConnell's recent disclosure of new details about his medical issues has sparked fresh scrutiny on Capitol Hill. His prolonged absence from the Senate has raised questions about the legitimacy of his extended leave. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has questioned whether McConnell's absence is "legal at this point."

Ocasio-Cortez expressed concerns about the precedent set by McConnell's extended absence, stating that it is not normal for elected members of Congress to go missing for months at a time. She emphasized that some regulations or legislation may be necessary to prevent lawmakers from being absent for long periods.

McConnell recently broke his silence on his previously undisclosed medical conditions, revealing that a childhood fight with polio contributed to a recent fall that left him hospitalized. He also contracted a mild case of pneumonia during his recovery. The Kentucky senator was first hospitalized on June 14 and has been absent from the Senate since then.

Some Republican senators have come to McConnell's defense, describing him as tough and resilient. Senator Roger Marshall noted that McConnell survived polio and underwent extensive therapy, demonstrating his ability to overcome challenges.

McConnell's initial silence on his medical condition fueled online speculation and unsubstantiated rumors about his health. Senators have acknowledged that a lack of transparency can lead to speculation and conspiracy theories. However, some Republican senators have expressed confidence that McConnell will return to the Senate floor for key votes.

Despite McConnell's statement on his medical absence, there is still uncertainty about when he will return to the Senate. His statement did not provide a specific timeline, only indicating that he would not be able to return to the Senate floor to vote "quite yet."

McConnell, 84, is set to retire next year at the end of his term. He has promised to continue working until then, and some Republican senators believe he will return to the Senate when his presence is needed.

Ocasio-Cortez and other lawmakers may push for regulations or legislation to address the issue of extended absences by lawmakers. While acknowledging that medical emergencies can be unpredictable, Ocasio-Cortez believes that there needs to be a limit to the length of absences and potentially some legislation to prevent long-term leaves.
