Lautaro Martinez was left on the bench during Argentina's World Cup final loss to Spain, a decision that has sparked some controversy.
Martinez, who scored the winner in Argentina's semi-final against England, did not see any action in the World Cup final, which Spain won 1-0 in extra time.
The Europeans dominated the game, but needed extra time to down the South American champions, with Ferran Torres netting the winner.
Argentina were dealt a blow when Enzo Fernandez was given a red card shortly before the end of normal time, and an injury to Lisandro Martinez in the first half also changed manager Lionel Scaloni's plans.
Despite his team's struggles, Martinez remained unused, which came as a surprise given his impressive form throughout the tournament.
The Inter Milan superstar has scored 40 goals for his country in 84 caps, three of those goals coming in this World Cup.
Martinez's feelings on the situation were clear when he wrote on Instagram, saying 'oh well' in a pointed comment.
'We gave it our all; for the second World Cup in a row, we reached the final, though this time it wasn't meant to be,' Martinez wrote.
'I am so proud to be Argentine. I would have liked to try to help the team out on the pitch yesterday, but oh well.'
Martinez also thanked his supporters for their backing throughout the tournament.
'Thank you to everyone who supported us throughout this World Cup – traveling kilometre after kilometre to be close to us – and to everyone who cheered us on from every corner of our country.'
Manager Lionel Scaloni hinted that he may be coming to the end of his time in charge of Argentina, with his contract set to expire in December.
Scaloni has won a World Cup and two Copa Americas in an incredible spell in charge, but said that he may not be able to repeat the success that he has had.
'I have an idea of what I want to do, I'll fulfill the contract and then I'll see,' Scaloni said.
'The truth is I feel the need to think, because I don't know if I'll be able to do something as big as this.'
Scaloni also spoke about the team's future, saying that he may need to 'reset' and 'form a group like this again', which he said would be difficult.
'I don't see it as that complicated, and every process eventually ends,' Scaloni said.
