Mike Phillips, a talented 24-year-old basketball player, has officially signed a two-year deal with the Kyoto Hannaryz of the Japan B.League, set to start in the 2026-2027 season this September.
The signing comes after a guessing game among Filipino fans, who were left wondering which team Phillips would join following his abrupt departure from the San Juan Knights in the MPBL.
Under the terms of the deal, Phillips will remain in Japan for the next two years, while continuing to suit up for Gilas Pilipinas in international competitions.
Phillips expressed his gratitude and excitement about joining the Kyoto Hannaryz, stating, "I'm truly honored and grateful for the opportunity to join the Kyoto Hannaryz organization and the (Japan) B.League. I'm excited to return and experience the passion of basketball in Japan once again."
With a stint in Japan university leagues with De La Salle University under his belt, Phillips is eager to give his all every day alongside his teammates and compete hard for the Kyoto fans and community throughout the season.
Phillips' move to the Kyoto Hannaryz comes after he became eligible to be an Asian import in Japan following his stint with Gilas Pilipinas in the third window of the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers in Oceania.
Before joining Gilas, Phillips made a name for himself in the UAAP, helping the Green Archers win two championships, including Season 88, where he was named the Finals MVP after averaging 12.58 points, 14.58 rebounds, 2.68 assists, and 1.32 steals per game.
With high hopes for Phillips to help the Hannaryz after their dismal 20th place finish last season, he joins a list of Filipino imports who have served in the Kyoto B.League, including Matthew Wright and Jamie Malonzo, who also donned national colors.
