Nationwide celebrations marking the United States’ 250th anniversary were disrupted in Philadelphia when officials canceled a scheduled parade due to extreme heat conditions.
Forecasts predicted temperatures could reach 104°F, the highest reading recorded in the city since July 1966. In response, the city’s health department extended a heat‑related emergency through 8 p.m. on Sunday.
Organizers announced the cancellation, noting that safety concerns for participants and spectators made it impossible to hold an event of this size under such hazardous conditions. The planned parade had been set to feature a series of floats and marching bands.
The organization’s president emphasized that protecting staff, guests, and event participants must always outweigh the desire for large‑scale celebrations. He described the decision as heartbreaking, given the extensive effort invested in creating a historic event.
